Searching for Raaha: Rituals and Paraphernalia of Housing Precarity

الملخص

In this thesis, I explore the politics surrounding housing precarity among queer migrants in Athens, Greece, employing Lancione’s (2023) analytical framework alongside insights from radical housing and queer migration studies. Relying on four months of ethnographic fieldwork, participant observation, and interviews conducted between 2022 and 2024, I show that through material objects, paraphernalia, and the sociality around them, queer migrants in Athens adeptly navigate housing precarity by infusing their living spaces with vitality through practices like mutual aid and queer rituals. Centering various material objects encountered in my ethnographic research, I highlight queer migrant strategies for crafting livable lives and pursuing Raaha (راحة), symbolizing tranquility and ontological security, within both governmental and humanitarian housing contexts. My analysis encompasses the various stages of housing precarity (pre-, in-, un-, and re-makings), examining historical contexts, individual experiences, creative agency, and governance dynamics. Ultimately, I offer a contextualized understanding of power dynamics, space, sexuality, and migrancy within precarious housing contexts.
