Pediatric Facial fractures at Khartoum Teaching Dental Hospital

Background: Trauma is the leading cause of mortality and morbidityin children. Trauma in children is usually represented with specialcomplications.Design: This is an observational, prospective, cross-sectional study ofpediatric patients with maxillofacial trauma presented during a oneyear period at Khartoum Teaching Dental Hospital (KTDH).Objectives: The study aimed at assessing the characteristics and thepattern of pediatric facial fractures at KTDH.Methods: A descriptive statistical analysis was performed based ondata collected about age, gender, etiology, concomitant injuries andmanagement.Results: A total of 390 patients, diagnosed with facial fractures, wereseen at KTDH; 55 (14.1%) were children below 16 years of age. Theage of the pediatric patients was at a range of 3 - 16 years with a meanage of 10 years (SD ±4). The ratio between males and females was 3:1.Page | VIMost fractures were due to road traffic accidents (RTA) (54.4%),followed by daily living activities (30.9%) and assault (14.5%). Themost prevalent anatomic sites of fractures were mandible (45.5%),combination fractures (32.7%), zygomatic-complex (12.7%), nasoorbital-ethmoid (NOE) (3.6%), and le fort I (1.8%). Concomitantinjuries were found in 5 children (9.1%). Patients were managedconservatively in (32.7%), closed reduction (50.9%) and surgical openreduction (16.4%).Conclusion: The findings of this study indicated that pediatric facialfractures constitute 14.1% of total facial fractures at KTDH whichneeds special consideration for this particular subpopulation. RTA wasthe main cause which should be considered in legislative andpreventive strategies
