(This study aims to assess the phytosanitary problems encountered in agricultural holdings in the Ouargla region. To this end, a survey was conducted among 30 farms located in various localities, as well as among 13 pesticide product retailers. In parallel, soil analyses were carried out to measure pH and electrical conductivity (EC) in order to evaluate the impact of phytosanitary practices on the physicochemical properties of the soil. The results revealed that nearly 83% of farmers regularly use pesticides, with a predominance of herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides. However, 71% of them had not received any prior training, and more than half were unaware of proper application practices. Moreover, 63% of the farmers intervene only after symptoms appear, reflecting a curative rather than preventive approach. On the retailers’ side, 38.5% return expired products, while the rest either store them or dispose of them in non-compliant ways. Soil analyses showed pH values ranging from 7.9 to 8.6, indicating strong alkalinity, and EC values that were high to very high in some plots, which may affect nutrient uptake. These findings highlight a lack of technical support, an overreliance on chemical inputs, and insufficient coordination among the different stakeholders. The study recommends implementing targeted training programs, strengthening control mechanisms, and ensuring regular monitoring of soil quality in Saharan agricultural areas).
