الملخص
Background: Mixed dentition analysis is the prediction of the tooth sizeof the unerupted permanent canine, first and second premolars (CPM) todetermine the discrepancy between the available and required space ineach dental arch. This is often done in the mixed dentition stage after theeruption of mandibular permanent incisors (MPI). It is an important stepin the diagnosis and treatment planning. The two most widely used nonradiographictooth size prediction methods were derived from populationsof Northern European ancestry. However, the applicability of thesemethods in other ethnic groups has been varied and questionable.Design: Descriptive, cross-sectional study.Settings: A sample of 250 female and male students, aged from 13 to 19years was randomly selected from two public high secondary schools ofKhartoum Locality. The mesiodistal widths of the upper and lower CPMas well as the MPI were measured manually on the dental casts using adigital caliper (Mitutoyo™, Japan). The predicted values of themesiodistal widths were statistically compared with the respective actualsum of the canine and premolars of the same quadrant. Objectives: To test the applicability of the T/J equation for the predictionof the mesiodistal width of the unerupted permanent teeth in a sample ofSudanese students and to develop a new prediction equation for thisspecific sample.VIResults: Moderate correlation coefficients between the sum of themesiodistal width of the MPI and the sum of the CPM were 0.618 (forlower) and 0.626 (for upper) in male subjects and 0.726 and 0.680,respectively, in female subjects. Further, a lower coefficient ofdetermination was recorded (0.45 and 0.48) with high standard error ofestimate of 0.87 in both jaws for combined genders.Furthermore, the Tanaka and Johnston equations overestimated the actualmesiodistal width of CPM in both arches for both genders separately andfor the combined genders. Finally, new prediction equations with moreaccurate regression parameters were proposed for males and femalescombined as well as for separate genders. Conclusion: The new proposed equations for the prediction of themesiodistal width of permanent canine, first and second premolars in bothjaws give better and accurate estimate among this Sudanese sample. Therefore, one can recommend, with caution, the use of this proposedequation among Sudanese population with the intention of conductingfuture studies using a more representative sample from the different partsof the Sudan.
