الملخص

Infant and child mortality are indicators of socioeconomic development. The Forth Millennium Development Goal (MDG-4) calls for reducing child mortality by two third between 1990 and 2015.In Sudan this period almost passed but the proposed levels did not fall by two third , infant and child mortality rates are still high. This study was conducted in Red Sea State. The study aims to estimate levels of infant and child mortality and to determine the most influential factors on the survival of children. The data source of this study was primary data obtained by questionnaires, from selected households through direct interview. The survey considered ever married women of reproductive age (15-49 years) as the sampling unit; these include currently married, widowed, divorced, and currently separated women. The sample design was a two-stage stratified clustered sample. The localities of Red Sea State were considered as strata, and were further stratified into urban, rural and nomad areas according to the households number and then a group of households was selected from each group using equal distribution sample from administrative unites. A total of 767 eligible women aged15-49were identified and 703 were successfully interviewed. Statistical Packages for Social Science (SPSS) was used for analyses of the survey results data. Descriptive and inferential analysis were used, Chi-square in addition to logistic regression were used. The study showed very high levels of infant and child mortality; the average infant mortality rate by direct method was 62 per thousand, while child mortality was indicated to be about 104 deaths per thousand live births, and deaths of children under the age of five about 131 per thousand. In addition to different indirect technique were used to estimate infant and child mortality rates in the state (Brass, IMR was 131, U5MR was 126-Sulliavan, CMR was, 124per1000 live births). The study concluded that the prevailing environmental and socio economic circumstances; contributed to high infant and child mortality rates in the state. The study recommended the need for a government or external intervention to improve the environmental, socioeconomic circumstance in the state .It is also important to provide data by conducting studies and surveys periodically, which would provide a continually current data base.
