- Aim of Study :The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology as a primary procedure in the diagnosis of neoplastic and cystic lesions of oral region in the light of histopathologic Findings or clinical and radiologic Findings of these lesions .Materials and Methods :The study was conducted on 29patients of both sexs and all age groups, with various palpable lesions in the oral region. Then the cytology results obtained per FNAC were compared with the histopathological biopsy results of the same lesions or with clinic oradiological findings, when the surgical biopsy wasn't available, with follow up for 12 months. Results: cytologically, three cases were diagnosed as malignant lesions and twenty three cases as benign lesions and four lesions were inadequate for diagnosis. Histologically, 19of the 26cases had histologic follow up and all these cases were compatible with cytological diagnosis in regards to the nature of the lesion (benign or malignant) except two cases, one was diagnosed cytologically non specific lymphadenitis and other case was diagnosed cytologically benign cystic lesion, but these cases were found to be squamous cell carcinoma on histologic examination (False negative). The FNA failed to identify the specific diagnosis in most cases. When the cytological diagnoses were correlated with the clinic oradiological findings, the results were compatible in regards to the nature of the lesion too, except one case was diagnosed as warthin's tumor in the parotid gland. Conclusions: The FNAC is a simple, safe, effective, rapid, cost effective and patient friendly procedure for the diagnosis of oral lesions particularly in regards to discriminating benign from malignant soft tissue lesions. The FNAC is an excellent first line method for investigating the nature of palpable lesions in the oral region. It can obviate the need for surgery if the lesions are shown to be non neoplastic with prescence some limitations of this technique.
