Hormonal Control of Estrous Cycle of the Camel (Camelus Dromedarius)

الملخص

This work was undertaken to investigate the role of sex hormones in controlling oestrous cycle and ovulation in the she-camel (Camelus dromedarius). The breeding season of the camel seemed to occur the year round with peak ovarian activity during January-August. During oestrous cycle of 23-24 days in length, the peripheral plasma concentrations of progesterone, total estrogens and testosterone (measured by RIAs) and LH (monitored by the mouse leydig cell bioassay) were measured. The absence of LH surge and a low level of progesterone (< 1 ng/ml) during oestrus of (5 days) and throughout the cycle indicated a failure of spontaneous ovulation and absence of subsequent luteal phase in this species. High concentrations of testosterone and oestrogens in plasma and ovarian follicles indicated that the oestrous cycle in the camel is mostly follicular and that the increased values of the two hormones during follicular development (5 days) is probably the stimulus to behavioural oestrus.During oestrous cycle, follicular fluid of different size follicles were taken. The concentration of progesterone, oestradiol-17 ß, testosterone and PGF2α were estimated. There is a parallel increase in the concentration of oestradiol-17ß testosterone and PGF2α as the follicle grows in size. The highest concentration of these three hormones was found in the preovulatory follicle. The presence of appreciable amounts of PGF2α in a Graafian follicle, and the low levels in atretic one, suggesting that such hormone may be essential for follicular rupture.Intravenous injection of GnRH at a dose of 250 µg daily to she-camel resulted in increased release of LH>
