الملخص
This research studies the effects of repression, the size of movements, regime type and ethnic fractionalization on the probability that movements begin nonviolently or persist as nonviolent movements. Logistic regression analysis is used to analyze the dataset where only movements that are generally nonviolent in their first year are included. This thesis analyzes all movements to explore using violence at some point in time. The first group includes 130 cases between (1945-2013) that were primarily nonviolent in the first year; the second group includes 289 cases between (1945-2013) of all movements. Therefore, the research takes several different countries in which a shift from peaceful to armed resistance took place and other countries that did not witness this shift depending on The Nonviolent And Violent Campaigns And Outcomes (NAVCO2.1) dataset as a source for data on repression, participation; the V-Dem index provides data on liberal democracy (regime type); and the Historical Index Of Ethnic Fractionalization (HIEF) dataset offers data on ethnic fractionalization. Regarding the transition to violence, the analysis of movements that were nonviolent in the first year shows that the variables are not associated with the transition to violence. The results of the second analysis show that the size of participation is negatively correlated with becoming violent, while repression is positively correlated with becoming violent. This paper found that the size of participation in civil movements is associated with the persistence of nonviolence; more participation means that the movement is less likely to become violent. As for the determinants of violence, that is the results of the analysis of all movements, the research found that movements that take place in countries where regimes are repressive are more likely to stay nonviolent. The study found out that the campaign's first year is crucial; it influences the resistance tactics that the movement will use in the future. The variables had little impact on nonviolent movements that were mostly nonviolent in the first year. In the second analysis, variables, on the other hand, were correlated with the eruption of violent movements.
