الملخص
This thesis investigates the conditions that enable populist movements to gain traction in Western democracies, focusing on the interplay of economic insecurity, elite influence, and institutional structures. Using comparative case studies of the United States, Mexico, and Greece, it argues that economic hardship creates fertile ground for populism, but the political direction such movements take (left or right) depends heavily on elite cohesion and institutional context. The research integrates economic, cultural, and institutional explanations, emphasizing how elite responses shape populist outcomes. By bridging fragmented theoretical frameworks, the thesis offers a more comprehensive understanding of the rise of contemporary populism and its implications for democratic stability.
