- In this work, we used two different clays in order to improve their physicochemical properties for chlorothalonil (fungicide) removal in aqueous medium. The first clay is Mostaganem bentonite, the second is that of Zahana (Mascara).According to the analyses, the raw bentonite contains montmorillonite as the main mineral as well as quartz, calcite and dolomite. On the other hand, Zahana clay (type 2: 1) contains illite as the main mineral. After purification, the clays were chemical activated by reacting it with hydrochloric acid HCl and sulfuric acid separately at concentrations of 0.1;1;3 and 6N.The chemical modification caused destruction of the clay layers beyond the once normal concentration. This structural change increases the specific surface area and cation exchange capacity.A second modification was made by mixing the clays with 1N sulfuric acid followed by calcination at 100 and 200 ° C.Chlorothalonil (Chl) which is a fungicide inhibitor of fungi was chosen as the adsorbate for the adsorption experiments.Chl adsorption data showed that activated bentonite has a great potential of retention of this type of organic molecules. The isotherms are well described by the Freundlich model showing that the adsorption of Chl is in multilayers which takes place on a heterogeneous surface. The kinetic study reveals that the phenomenon follows the pseudo second order model. The thermodynamic study asserts that the adsorption of Chl by activated bentonite is physical in nature depending on the magnitude of the enthalpy change.Free energy is negative sign proof of spontaneity of reaction. The maximum amount adsorbed by bentonite was greater than that of Zahana clay. The adsorption capacity of Chl by clays which have undergone a double treatment indicates a slight decrease compared to that obtained by bentonite activated with sulfuric acid.So the heat treatment of the two materials after chemical attack is not beneficial.
