Estimation of Phenotypic and Genetic Parameters for Productive Reproductive and Morphometric Traits of Sudanese Rabbits

This study was carried out in the Rural Development andExtension Centre, Faculty of Animal Production at El Managil,University of Gezira to assess production and reproductionpotentialities, genetic and phenotypic parameters of post-weaningbody weights and of the morphological linear traits, carcass, meatquality traits, serum chemical characteristics and pre and postweaningmortality in local rabbits. Twenty male and sixty femalerabbits were used as the foundation stock to obtain the first andsecond generations whose data were used in this study. The first andsecond generations were reproduced from one hundred and twentynine and fifty two litters respectively. The results showed thatproduction and reproduction potentialities were very low, but similarto those of many local breeds. Seasons affected litter size at weaningin first and second generations and litter weight in the secondgeneration. This may reveal the possibility improving of them usingselection tools. The results exhibited that morphometric equationscan be used to predict growth trait with heart girth, body length,height at wither, giving the best prediction. Coefficients of variationfor production and reproduction traits in this study were high. Theheritability estimates in this study were moderate for growth traitsand high to moderate for linear traits. The genetic correlations amonggrowth traits and the genetic correlations of body weight with theother linear traits were high. This indicates that improving growthtraits will ultimately result in improving morphometriccharacteristics. Since heritability estimates and coefficients of geneticcorrelation were high to moderate in growth traits, geneticimprovement for these traits can be achieved by selection firstly thenby cross breeding with exotic rabbit breeds.
