الملخص

This study focused on the assessment and evaluation of sand encroachment in Dongola area Northern State (Sudan) and the changes that occurred in the River Nile water-course due to sand encroachment and soil erosion by water (Al-Haddam) in addition to tracing the source of this encroaching sand in the study area. This study was based on the data and information deduced from remote sensed landsat mulispectral scanner (MSS) images, landsat thematic mapper (TM) images and aerial photos. In addition to fieldwork verification, soil analysis and slide method technique and other sources. The study covered the period 1961-2002. The study revealed that both natural environments and human activities of the study area witnessed remarkable changes during the study period 1961 - 2002. Sand encroachment has extremely affected agricultural and residential areas, and it is threatening the River Nile water-course in many locations. Moreover, the study revealed that some changes occured in the River Nile water-course due to water erosion and sand encroachment. The study showed, as well, showed that some changes (expansion) of the residential areas took place during the same period. In mineralogical analysis the slide method technique proved that basement complex is the source of the sand in the area due eroision . The study proved that Remote Sensing Technique, Geographic Information System (GIS) and Global Posioniong System (GPS) represent important techniques which should be exploited in such studies.
