First of all, writing and recording history is not an easy task. Anyone who records a historical event or tells a historical reality is not necessarily a historian, but rather a witness and nothing else, because the work of historians is a science, profession, and art and requires important and effective tools, whether spirit, reason, honesty, calmness, objectivity, certification, analysis, comparison, criticism and accuracy of transmission that is free from reactions, mental agitation, ethnic, religious, sectarian nervousness, etc., or material such as documents, manuscripts, archaeological examination and historical sources at the scientific and academic level within a particular historical method. Thus, we can claim that history means (a history recorder) which is different from a historian who appears as a judge, researcher, and critic. Thus, of course, Dr. Hissam Al-Din Ali Ghalib al-Naqshbandi is of the second type. He is one of the historians who has these characteristics, such as a judgmental historian and history writer in detail, especially in writing Kurdish history during the Islamic period in the Middle Ages. This research entitled (Dr. Hissam Al-Din Ali Ghalib Al-Naqshbandi, Life, Works, and Method in Writing History) is a master's thesis, a historical, documentary, and methodological research. It is based on several documents and historical sources, it also presents several aspects of Dr. Hisam Al-Din's childhood and social and cognitive maturity under the difficult political situation during the Ba'ath regime until he retires from university service. Dr. Hissam Al-Din was not only a historian, judge, and critic but also a successful administrator. He played an important role in the field of university administration, both as the head of the Department of History in both Sulaimani and Salahaddin Universities for a certain period or as the supervisor of a large number of master's and doctoral theses. In addition to his advisory role in the preparation of historical magazines and active membership in the advisory committee of magazines such as the magazine (Hazar Merd).Of course, at the beginning of this study, we faced many obstacles, especially in the stage of collecting information about the life of Dr. Hisam Al-Ddin, especially inhis youth as a university student. Therefore, the loss of a large number of manuscripts, documents, and personal files on the one hand and his poor health condition after his retirement until now (December 2022) on the other hand have been obvious obstacles in this area. This is in addition to the negative impact of the coronavirus outbreak, which was a major obstacle to our interviews with members of this historian's family. The paper consists of four sections with an introduction and a conclusion. Each section consists of several themes, branches, and points. The first part consists of two subjects. The first chapter is devoted to the early childhood, educational and social life of Dr. Hissam Al-Din, but the second chapter is devoted to the stages of education with Dr. Hissam Al-Din, from primary to secondary and high school until he obtained master's and doctoral degrees in the University of Sulaimani. However, the second part is written about the most important historical works and publications of Dr. Hisam Al-Din, whether as books, manuscripts, and historical documents or his role as an encyclopedia in the field of bibliography and research published in journals and newspapers. In the third part, we have written about the role of Dr. Hisam Al-Din in the field of administration, culture, and science, his participation in conferences and seminars, and his role in writing Kurdish history. The fourth and final part consists of three topics. The first topic is about the concept of method, its definition, importance, and types because most of Dr. Hisam Al-Din's works are related to Islamic history and Kurdish emirates during the Islamic period. Thus, we have devoted the second discussion to the method of writing history in the Middle Ages. The third chapter is devoted to the method of writing history by Dr. Hisam Al-Din and the most important methods and steps he followed in the field of writing history, in addition to his opinions and views on the movement of history.
