Petrochemical produced water (PPW) in oil and gas fields contains a high concentration of pollutants and represents one of the largest wastewater streams. Current treatment technologies for PPW are highly expensive and have limited applicability. Therefore, there is an urgent need for sustainable, cost-effective technologies to treat this water efficiently. The microbial desalination cell (MDC) is considered a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to conventional desalination and wastewater treatment methods. However, MDCs suffer from limitations such as small cell volume, low mass desalination rate, and high internal resistance. To address these limitations, a novel configuration called the quadruple microbial desalination cell (QMDC) has been developed. This configuration has the potential to generate higher current and treat high-salinity water. A new design of QMDC is proposed, featuring a large-volume single desalination chamber positioned at the center of the system. This chamber is equipped with multiple ion exchange membranes (IEMs) and is flanked by two anode and two cathode chambers. This arrangement is intended to enhance electric gradient forces and reduce internal resistance during operation. This research aims to evaluate the performance of the QMDC using NaCl and PPW in terms of current generation, power recovery, and desalination rate. In the first phase, a 35 g/L NaCl solution was treated in the QMDC using three connection modes: individual, parallel, and series. The results showed that the parallel configuration (PQMDC) achieved the highest average current and power density, with values of 16.55 mA and 2.68 W/m², respectively. In contrast, the individual configuration (IQMDC) produced the lowest average current of 6.62 mA. The findings also revealed that the system's internal resistance was highly sensitive to the connection mode. The lowest internal resistance was observed in PQMDC (29.5 Ω) compared to the other configurations. Additionally, the parallel connection achieved a high desalination rate of up to 45.89 mg/hr. Based on these results, PQMDC was selected as the optimal connection mode for operating the QMDC with high-salinity PPW. Further experiments using PPW as the saline feed in PQMDC demonstrated high current generation (45.74 mA), a maximum power density of 2.12 W/m², and a low internal resistance of 25 Ω. The system achieved a concentration desalination rate of 5.6 g/L/day in batch operation. However, further feasibility studies are required to assess the suitability of QMDC technology for real-scale applications and the potential for byproduct recovery during the treatment process.
