Above the liquides, the gray cast iron can be brought to a higher or lower temperature (this is called overheating) and more or less long. Thus, the influence of the temperature reached above the liquidus has been emphasized in Figure 22. According to E. Piwowarsky shows that the rise in this temperature increases the phenomenon of overcooling. Since the overcooling refines the graphite, this can be an advantage, provided that the form D does not appear. For hyper eutectic or eutectic casts, overheating is interesting; but, for hypo eutectic cast irons, a strong overcooling may be dangerous because graphite D is often accompanied by ferrite poorly distributed in the matrix.We can summarize the action of overheating on the structure of the gray cast irons as follow: the overheating causes first a refinement of the graphite which, from course, becomes medium, then fine; by increasing overheating, graphite continues to refine, but it takes generally unfavorable form D. By increasing it further, the cast becomes trusty, then white. On this, the purpose of this experimental work is to study the influence of the overheating temperature on the graphite shape, as well as on the mechanical characteristics of a series of allied hypoeutectic gray cast irons intended for the casting of large parts using an abacus for the determination of the overheating temperature as a function of the chemical composition (C , If).
