الملخص

Nocturnal enuresis is a common disorder in schoolchildren. It results in multiple emotional, behavioural and academic consequences. Little is known by caregivers about the origin and nature of the problem and the appropriate pathways for help. The knowledge of caregivers about enuresis is a field that still demands profound research in Sudan. The aim of the study was to determine the knowledge of caregivers of children having nocturnal enuresis about the disease and the factors related to it, and to identify their attitudes and practices towards nocturnal enuresis and its complications and management. A cross-sectional descriptive study in which ninety seven of the caregivers accompanying their children to the psychiatric school health clinic in HajaSakina health center in Omdurman for the treatment of nocturnal enuresis were interviewed during the period January to March 2014. Sociodemographic data of the participants and clinical data of the children‟s condition were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. The interviews were done by the researcher and the psychologists. The mean age of participants was 40 years and most of them were mothers. Most of the children were in the age group of 9-12 years. They live in the three localities of Omdurman.. The average correct response to questions regarding knowledge, attitude and practice towards nocturnal enuresis in children was 33.5%, 58% and 55% respectively. The mean total score for all responses was found to be 14 (62%). The study concluded that there is a higher frequency of NE among children living in Ombadda locality (72%) compared to Omdurman and Karari localities within the age group of 9-12 years due to high density of population in Ombadda. Most of them are basic school pupils (97.9%). Therefore health workers should make question about enuresis to be a standard part of their history taking particularly for children who visit HajaSakina PHC center at Omdurman. The researcher recommended that the function of education should be enhanced. Both the children and their caregivers can have improved understanding of the disorder and hence, better attitudes toward solving the problem. Support given to affected children and caregivers coping with the burden of the disorder will ameliorate the long-term consequences of the disorder.
