The construction of residential projects represents the largest portion of the construction industry in Oman. In this study, compacted blocks made of dune sand and clay (Attapulgite), with stabilizers such as Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) or Cement Kiln Dust (CKD), were fabricated for low-cost housing. The blocks were manufactured using a manual Cinva-Ram press machine. Characterization tests were conducted on the sand and Attapulgite to verify the suitability of these materials for producing construction-grade blocks. The effects of OPC and CKD on compressive strength and density were investigated. Additionally, total water absorption, surface water absorption, and thermal conductivity of the produced blocks were analyzed to identify the most suitable mix. Five different proportions (series) of dune sand and Attapulgite stabilized with OPC were studied. Each series included 8 mixes with cement content at 5%, 6%, 7%, 8%, 9%, 10%, 12%, and 14% of the total mix volume. Similarly, three series of dune sand and Attapulgite were mixed with CKD in the same percentage range. At least three blocks were fabricated for each of the 64 mixes (calculated as (5 OPC series + 3 CKD series) × 8 mixes = 64). The mixes were labeled using abbreviations that represent the materials, series number, and stabilizer percentage. For example: SAC1-05 refers to a mix of Sand, Attapulgite, Cement (Series 1) with 5% cement. SAKD1-05 refers to a mix of Sand, Attapulgite, Kiln Dust (Series 1) with 5% CKD. Among the 64 tested mixes, SAC2-13 and SAC2-14 were found to yield the highest compressive strength of 7.8 N/mm² at 28 days after casting. The SAC2-13 mix was selected for further evaluation, including tests for density, total water absorption, surface water absorption, and thermal conductivity. According to ARS 680 (1996), the density of compressed blocks made from normal soil ranges between 1800–2000 kg/m³. The blocks made from dune sand exhibited lower average density, primarily because dune sand cannot be compressed to reach densities comparable to normal soil blocks. The SAC2-13 block was found to have acceptable total water absorption and thermal conductivity, though surface water absorption was slightly high.
