الملخص
Stannous chloride (SnCl2) is widely used in daily human life and able to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can damage DNA. Biochemical, clinical, and epidemiological studies have indicated that ascorbic acid (AA) may be of benefit in chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and cataract, probably through antioxidant mechanisms. Therefore, the present experiment was carried out to determine the effectiveness of L-ascorbic acid in alleviating the toxicity of SnCl2 on certain hemato-biochemical parameters, lipid peroxidation, enzyme activities and growth performance of male New-Zealand white rabbits. Six rabbits per group were assigned to 1 of 4 treatment groups: 0 mg AA and 0 mg SnCl2/kg BW (control); 40 mg AA/kg BW; 20 mg SnCl2 /kg BW; 40 mg AA/kg BW plus 20 mg SnCl2. Rabbits were orally administered their respective doses every other day for 10 weeks. Results obtained showed that SnCl2 significantly (P<0.05) induced plasma free radicals and the activity of glutathione S-transferase (GST). Plasma aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (AlP), and acid phosphatase (AcP) activities were significantly increased. Contrariwise, the activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was significantly decreased in plasma. Stannous chloride treatment caused a significant decrease in blood hemoglobin (Hb), total erythrocytic count (TEC), packed cell volume (PCV), total leukocyte count (TLC), mean cell hemoglobin (MCH), mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), total protein (TP) and albumin. Concentrations of glucose, urea, cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), low density lipoprotein (LDL) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) were significantly increased, while high density lipoprotein (HDL) was decreased. Relative weights of liver and spleen were significantly (P<0.05) increased, while relative weights of brain, lung, heart, kidney and bladder were not affected. On the other hand, body weight, feed intake, creatinine, total lipids (TL) and globulin were not affected. Ascorbic acid alone significantly decreased the levels of free radicals, TL, TG, VLDL, urea and creatinine, and increased the TEC, TLC, body weight and feed intake. While, the rest of the tested parameters were not affected. Also, the present study showed that ascorbic acid can be effective in the protection of stannous-induced toxicity.
