- Abstract. Mzab Valley, located in southern Algeria, is subject to an arid Saharan climate. Population growth and the agroindustrial development have led to à very high water demand, requiring a mobilization of these exploitable water resources. Objective of this work is to evaluate the physical and chemical quality of water from different aquifers overlooked with WHO standards and Algerian drinking water standards, and their suitability for irrigation. In the M'Zab region there are two aquifer; The shallow aquifer is formed from alluvium and thick Quaternary sands can reach 25 to 30 meters based on the limestone layers Turonian cracked thickness of 40 to 100m, and an intercalary continental aquifer in the valley M ' zab is composed of fine sand and sandstone yellowish to gray interbedded clays, their roof reaches the score of 290-300 meters. The waters of the shallow aquifer of the M'Zab Valley, are not drinking in reference to WHO standards and Algerian standards for drinking water, because they are highly mineralized and very hard. Their facies is a chloride magnesium, calcium chlorinated, calcic sulfated sodium sulfated and sulfated magnesium. The representation of these waters on Richards diagram shows that they are very poor to very poor for irrigation because they are in the C4-C4-S1 and S3 classes. Continental interlayer water facies are the calcium sulfate or sodium chloride-general, they are drinking in reference to WHO standards and Algerian norms. The representation of these waters on the Richards diagram shows that they are poor to average quality for irrigation because they are in the C3 S1 and C3S2 classes.
