الملخص
Development of medical students profession demands acquisition of skills that encourage continuous and lifelong learning. Self-directed learning is one among those skills which is important for medical students, identified in the 21st Century Learning Frameworks. The main objective of the present study was to explore the readiness for Self-Directed Learning (SDL) among medical students enrolled at University of Bisha , college of Medicine (UBCOM) in Saudi Arabia. Aquestionnaire-based cross-sectional descriptive study involving a convenient sample of undergraduate UBCOM students. The participants consisted of 161 UBCOM undergraduate medical students. These were recruited from each class. The reliability of a questionnaire was checked and confirmed by Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient.Level of self-directed learning readiness was determined by utilizing a self-directed learning readiness scale comprising five points Likert scale 1= strongly Disagree & 5= strongly agree. Data were collected using a Self -Directed Learner Readiness Scale (SDLRS) which is a self-assessment tool aimed to assess three main components: self-management, desire for learning and self-control. The students responded to each item of the SDLRS on a 5-point Likert scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS, mean and total scores were calculated and were compared among student’s groups. The mean percentage scores of overall self-directed learning readiness of the medical students at UBCOM was relatively high (3.80±1.14) .The results revealed that the mean score for the desire of learning was the highest (4.14±1.15) of all the three components of the SDLRS followed by self-control (3.83±1.12), while the least mean score was for self-management (3.42±1.16). Based upon another part of results, the students with different educational levels, age and GPA had different self-directed learning skills. The present study revealed that the overall SDL readiness of participants was good, students were highly motivated for self-learning and had the ability for self-control. However, they need assistance to improve their self-management skills. The present study revealed that there was statically significant difference between demographic data with overall score of self-directed learning readiness.
