Biology of Polecilocerus hierogiyphious (Klug) and Tree Locusts of the Genus Anacridium in the Sudan

الملخص

Field and laboratory observations were made on Poecilocerus hierogiyphicus in Khartoum area during the year 1963/ 64 and the life-cycle was investigated. Eggs are laid in about mid-July and hatch in September and October. The hoppers reach the adult stage in February after passing through seven instars. The development of the eggs of Poecilocerus in various conditions, of moisture was investigated. The development was found to be direct, in most, conditions. Eggs could, withstand dry conditions for at least one month. This was discussed in relation to the semi-desert conditions in which Poecilocerus lives.The distribution of Tree Locusts of the genus Anacridium in Khartoum, Blue Nile, Kordofan and Darfur provinces was recorded together with the food plants on, which they were found. The life-cycle of A. m. melanorhodon was followed both, in the laboratory and in the field. The eggs are laid in late June and July (with the onset of rains) and the hoppers pass through five instars before reaching the adult stage in October or November. The adults mature in June.Both solitary and swarming A. m. melanorhodon were found during the investigation and differences in colour, behaviour, food preferences, morphmetric measurements and probably in morphmetric ratios were found between the two phases.Two female specimens showing the general characters of Anacridium were found and provisionally described as Anacrdium sudanensis
