الملخص

The high prevalence of transfusion transmitted infections (TTIs) such as HIV, HBV, HCV and syphilis in sub-Saharan Africa affects blood transfusion safety. In Sudan, most blood banks in rural areas use only a rapid serological test to screen for TTI infections which does not comply with the guidelines of WHO.This was cross-sectional laboratory based study conducted from October to December 2020, and aimed to detect the sero-prevalence of TTIs among blood donors attended Blood Bank of Khartoum North Hospital. For each unit of donated blood, information on donor age, blood group and Rh factor were obtained. ELISA test uses for the detection of included TTIs. Collected data was analyzed using SPSS computer program version 20. In the results, out of 1500 participant’s ages ranged from 18 to 60 years with mean of 36 years. 6.1% (92/1500) participants were positive for all tested TTIs. The prevalence of HIV, HBV, HCV and syphilis were 0.3% (4/1500), 3.6% (54/1500), 0.1% (2/1500) and 2.1% (32/1500) respectively. The most affected age group was from 35 to 44 years while no sero-positivity was recorded in the age group of 45 to 60 years. Sero-positivity of HBV was observed among all blood groups. No significant association between TTIs sero-positivity and age group (P.value = 0.05) or blood group (P.value = 0.058) of participants. Rh factor positive donors among HBV sero-positivity was 94% (51/54) and syphilis was 91 %( 29/32). The study concluded that the sero-prevalence of HBV and syphilis were more high compared to HIV and HCV in the community local to Khartoum North Hospital. The study recommended followed of strict criteria for blood donors selection and the laboratory assay methods for detection of infectious agents, and follow-up of sero-positive cases
