- Blastocystis sp. is the enteric parasite most frequently encountered in human feces, which is the subject of much controversy, particularly on its pathogenic potential. The objective of our work is to study the asymptomatic carrying of Blastocystis sp. and to explore the pathogenicity of this parasite in patients with digestive disorders. This study is conducted on a population of 98 subjects referred to the Parasitology-Mycology laboratory of the Tizi-Ouzou University Hospital over a period of 3 months from 04/02/2024 to 04/05/2024. Of the 98 subjects analyzed, 32 were positive for Blastocystis sp. with a frequency of 32.7%, IC95 = [23.5% - 42.9%], among which 42% presented for a health check and 23% for a diagnosis. Blastocystis sp. infection is high in male patients with a rate of 43%, against 22% in female patients (p value = 0.03). The age group most affected by this parasite is that of young adults (20–40) with a rate of (45%). Moreover, our study shows that 50% of Blastocystis sp. positives were asymptomatic against 29% of subjects with symptoms, however, the difference is not significant (p > 0.05).
