THE EFFECTIVENESS OF AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM FOR NURSES/MIDWIVES ON PLACENTA EXAMINATION PERFORMANCE AT MATERNITY TEACHING HOSPITAL IN SULAIMANI CITY

الملخص

Background: Maternity nurses and midwives are the frontline health care providers multifaceted with responsibilities to improve women’s health, decrease morbidity, and save the mother's life. This can be achieved through improving knowledge and technical skills, besides clinical decision-making and judgment. Aim: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational program for Nurses/Midwives on placenta examination performance at Maternity Emergency Teaching Hospital in Sulaimani City. Method: A quasi-experimental study was conducted in a maternity teaching center in the city of Sulaimani. A purposive sample consists of (87) nurses/midwives with different qualifications and years of experience. Data collection from August 2021 to the end of December 2021 using a structured interview questionnaire and achecklist to monitor the performance of nurses/midwives in examining the placenta. Results: Thes tudy found that (67.8 %) of the participants have10 or more years of experience in labor and delivery service. The educational backgrounds of more than half of these participants are holding diploma certificates, and the majority of nurses/midwives have poor knowledge regarding the structure and function of the placenta, as well as how to examine the placenta after delivery and follow traditional performance procedures. The study found a highly significant association between nurses'/midwives' overall practice and their level of education, as well as their age, marital status, and their employment. Conclusion: The study concluded that after implementing the education program the Knowledge and performance of the Nurses/Midwives were improved and the maximum percentage of them had good Knowledge and practice.
