الملخص

This dissertation examines how the emerging technology known as Artificial Intelligence or (AI) is portrayed in Western and Arabic media through a comparative content analysis of 380 news articles published during a period of six months between January and June 2024 by four major outlets: The New York Times (NYT) and The Guardian, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, and Asharq Al-Awsat. Drawing on framing theory, this research measures the presence of 19 issue-specific frames and six source types to analyze variations in topic selection, framing tendencies, and sourcing patterns. Findings reveal both regions predominantly framed AI positively with a notable rise in negative framing. Western media framing was most balanced: NYT prioritizing economic growth and The Guardian emphasizing technological advancement, with both emphasizing ethical concerns, fear, and privacy. Arabic media framing diverged; Al-Araby Al-Jadeed was most negative, focusing on political implications and critical frames like fear and privacy, while Asharq Al-Awsat adopted a limited research focused optimism. Industry sources dominated in all outlets. NYT relied mostly on industry and media sources, while the Guardian cited more from government and academia. Al-Araby Al-Jadeed sourced from industry and government most, while Asharq Al-Awsat depended on industry alone. All outlets prioritized frames of Governmental Regulations and Misinformation, but Arabic media especially Asharq Al-Awsat relied solely on them.
