This thesis explores the application of unsupervised learning algorithms in the classification of wells within the oil and gas sector. It focuses on key clustering techniques, namely: K-Means, Fuzzy C-Means, and Hierarchical Clustering. The primary objective is to demonstrate how these models can enhance operational efficiency and transform practices in the energy industry through the application of machine learning (ML) methodologies. The study emphasizes the critical importance of accurate well classification, outlining the operational and strategic advantages of employing ML algorithms in this context. Each clustering algorithm is assessed with regard to reservoir characteristics, well configuration, and geospatial variables, which are pivotal in determining model performance and clustering effectiveness. Special attention is given to the role of feature selection, which significantly influences clustering precision and overall model efficacy. The research methodology follows a structured approach, comprising stages such as data collection, preprocessing, algorithm implementation, and performance evaluation using a range of clustering validation metrics. The findings indicate that K-Means is both straightforward and efficient for well classification, while Hierarchical Clustering offers deeper insights into the underlying data structure. On the other hand, Fuzzy C-Means facilitates soft clustering but presents challenges in clearly identifying well-separated clusters. The thesis concludes that all three clustering models hold transformative potential for enhancing decision-making and optimizing operations in the energy sector. The study advocates for further research aimed at algorithm refinement, hybridization with supervised learning techniques, and the exploration of alternative clustering approaches. Validation of these models using real-world datasets is recommended to reinforce their practical applicability and to further enhance operational decision-making processes in the oil and gas industry.
