The life cycle of an oil production well can be divided into several stages, starting from exploration and ending with abandonment. Each stage serves a specific purpose and involves different activities and considerations. The production phase is one of the most critical stages, where the well begins to flow and produce economically. During this phase, production rates are monitored, and reservoir management strategies are implemented to maximize recovery and minimize well decline. In the initial production stage, most wells flow naturally by relying on the reservoir's natural pressure to bring oil to the surface, resulting in relatively low operating costs. However, over time, reservoir pressure declines and eventually becomes insufficient to lift oil to the surface effectively. At this point, artificial lift systems are implemented to enhance production rates and compensate for the loss of natural pressure. These systems help maintain or increase production levels by supplying the necessary energy to lift oil to the surface. Wells equipped with artificial lift tend to have higher operational costs due to the energy requirements of the lifting mechanisms, and they often require more maintenance and monitoring to ensure efficient and consistent production. Therefore, selecting the appropriate artificial lift system is a critical decision, as it significantly affects well productivity and operational costs. Traditional methods for selecting the optimal lift system often rely on empirical data and expert judgment, making the process time-consuming and sometimes suboptimal, which can lead to increased operational costs. To address this challenge, the present study proposes the development and implementation of a Machine Learning (ML) model to predict the most suitable artificial lift system for individual oil wells in the South Oman fields. The study began by collecting completion and production data from approximately 995 horizontal wells operated using four types of Artificial Lift Systems (ALS). The dataset was cleaned, and the model was trained and validated to prepare it for deployment. Feature engineering and data preprocessing were performed to ensure the quality and relevance of the input data. By applying six machine learning classification algorithms—including Decision Tree, K-Nearest Neighbors, Random Forest, Support Vector Machines, Naïve Bayes, and Logistic Regression—we were able to identify patterns and relationships between well attributes and optimal lift systems. This thesis aims to enhance the decision-making process by offering a data-driven approach that can assist operators and early-career engineers in selecting the most suitable artificial lift system for a given well. The results of the study were highly promising, with four algorithms achieving an accuracy of over 95% at a train-test split ratio of 70:30, demonstrating the reliability of the model for future applications.
