Online shopping has gained widespread popularity due to the rapid growth of the e-commerce market, increased accessibility to internet technology, and the availability of a wide range of mobile shopping applications. Similar to traditional shopping, online consumers’ understanding and interpretation of product information can be influenced by various factors. These factors, in turn, may affect purchasing decisions and subsequently impact the sales performance of e-commerce platforms. A considerable number of studies have been conducted to explore the factors influencing online sales performance, with online consumer reviews identified as one of the most influential. However, most existing research has focused on e-commerce platforms based in the United States, China, and India, while studies addressing this issue in the Arabian Gulf region remain scarce. This is notable given the region's increasing significance in the global e-commerce landscape, with profits rising from $5 billion in 2015 to $20 billion in 2020. This study aims to fill this research gap by analyzing the impact of online consumer reviews on the sales performance of Amazon.ae. A research model was developed and its hypotheses tested. Additionally, the study investigates the moderating effect of product category on the relationship between online consumer reviews and online sales performance. Amazon.ae was selected as the focus of this study due to its status as one of the leading e-commerce platforms in the Gulf region. A dataset comprising 5,066 product records from eight different product categories was collected and analyzed. The findings revealed that the average online review rating does not significantly influence online sales performance on Amazon.ae. In contrast, the volume of online reviews was found to have a strong positive impact on sales performance. Furthermore, the product category was shown to moderate the relationship between consumer reviews and sales. These findings contribute to the existing literature by providing new insights into the influence of online consumer reviews on sales performance within a Gulf-based e-commerce context. They also offer practical value to decision-makers in the e-commerce sector by enhancing their understanding of how online reviews affect sales outcomes and identifying which aspects of reviews have the most substantial impact.
