الملخص
Back ground:In recent years the relation ship between coronary heart disease(CHD) and periodontal disease has attracted considerable attention.Several longitudinal and cross sectional studies have indicated anassociation between periodontitis and coronary heart disease(CHD), however some studies did not confirm such association.Setting:El-shaab teaching hospital (ESHT) and Sudan heart center (SHC)-.Khartoum- Sudan. Objective:The present study was designed to investigate the associationbetween periodontis and coronary heart disease (CHD) in patientswith (CHD).Methods:A group of fifty patients age(30-60)years who had (CHD) and wereadmitted both in Sudan heart center and El shaab teaching hospitaland agree to continue in the study were selected Diabetic patientswere excluded.XOn the other hand fifty medically healthy individuals with the sameage range were included as control.Periodontal parameters for all subjects were examined using theplaque Index (PI), Gingival Index (GI), Probeable Pocket Depth(PPD) and Clinical Attachment Level (CAL). Oral hygienemeasures such as brushing habits, technique and frequency wereassessed. Results:The results revealed that patients with coronary heart disease had ahigher mean and standard deviation for plaque index as comparedto the control group with a mean and standard deviation for sample(2.34±0.66) where the control group (2.04±0.57).Also the study group had more gingival inflammation with a meanand standard deviation (2.78±0.71) as compared to control group(2.46±0.73) The mean and standard deviation for the clinicalattachment loss was (1.98±0.89) for study group and (1.36±0.78)for control group the difference was highly significant (P<0.000).Furthermore the study group had more probeable pocket depth withthe mean and standard deviation (1.60±0.76) for study as comparedto (1.14±0.53) for control with a high significant differencedXI(P<0.000). Also the results revealed that there was no effect ofsmoke and gender on the periodontal status of the study group. Conclusion:This study showed that periodontal status of (CHD) patients wasbad compared to control group. It seems there is a need to carryfurther studies to find the relation ship between coronary heartdisease and periodontal disease.
