الملخص
Endless corridors and sounds of fluorescent lights reflecting on yellow tinted wallpapers: that is the disorienting world of the Backrooms, a digital folktale that keeps captivating the world wide web. Unlike traditional storytelling, this phenomenon unraveled in a unique way harvesting enough attention to make the posthuman concerns resurface, in that way, it is still considered an underexplored area within the academic sphere that needs further study. Based on that, this thesis aim is to analyze the Backrooms as a form of digital storytelling that, while rooted in atmosphere, evolves through fragmented and non-linear narrative structures. The first chapter highlights how the Backrooms challenge traditional storytelling by replacing plot-driven progression with level-based, collaborative user-generated, and spatialized narratives where instead of resolution, meaning unfolds through aspects such as exploration, repetition, and accumulation. Also, relying on theories of the uncanny, particularly Freud’s notion of the return of the repressed, this study establishes a conceptual framework before tracing its transformation within digital environments. It argues that the Backrooms reconfigure the uncanny through liminal spaces in a way that is a continuous experiential condition and not just a momentary disturbance, while outlining a new framework for thinking about perception, subjectivity, and cultural anxiety in increasingly networked and posthuman environments. This study is significant in that it reconsiders the uncanny within contemporary digital contexts as well as touching upon discussions concerning the transformation of narrative within them, particularly in relation to participatory and spatial storytelling. Its importance remains in the fact that it sheds light on a culturally pervasive and impactful phenomenon. In addition, it engages with posthuman theory where it displays the functioning of the Backrooms as a collective and participatory narrative form, where storytelling is diffused across users and spatial experiences, representing broader cultural anxieties tied to the digital and the impact it has on the human condition under its circumstances.
