الملخص

This is a descriptive clinical study compiled at Al Shaab TeachingHospital, Khartoum, Sudan, with Department of Internal Medicine –Khartoum University on 100 patients during the period from February2002 to October 2004. The objective of this study was to identify theprevalence of the neurological complications of diabetic patientsattending the outpatient clinics of Al Shaab Teaching Hospital inKhartoum.. One hundred cases of diabetes mellitus (DM) were studiedfor prevalence of neurological manifestations, they were 62 male and 38females. More than 85% were above the age of 35 years and 56% were inthe age group 35- 64. The patients were from different tribes and differentstates.This study revealed that 60% of the diabetic patients examinedhave neurological manifestations. The main neurological complication isperipheral sensori-motor neuropathy. Diabetic amyotrophy was found in8% of patientsThere was a significant positive correlation between age, durationof diabetes, glycaemic control and occurrence of the neurologicalcomplications.60% of the patients of diabetes mellitus with neurologicalmanifestations were of Northern Sudanese origin while the rest ofpatients were from eastern and western states. 83.7% of the patients weretype 1 diabetes mellitus and 78.4% of them have diabetes for one year ormore duration. Hypertension was found to be associated with diabetesmellitus. in 28% of patients
