The publication of Robert Putnam book "Making Democracy Work,"made the concept of social capital significance in various social sciences.This thesis explores the causal links between the key analytical concepts presented by the book in an attempt to advance the social capital research agenda it initiated. The first chapter of this study reviews the theoretical and empirical foundations of Putnam's work by analyzing the historically extended disparity between the politically, socially, and economically advanced Northern Italy and its poor, backward South, concluding that social capital is the capable of explaining this difference. Then, the second chapter critically evaluates Putnam's conclusions about social capital as the cause of the contrasts between northern and southern Italy by analyzing the assumptions and evidence he used to justify his findings. The last critical opinions and pose some questions regarding the extent to which the paths of political and economic development are linked to the availability of strong and effective social capital.Moreover, it criticizes the idea of social capital for creating and maintaining democracy. Finally, it concludes that the components of social capital stem from the existence of a democratic governmental system, not the reverse, and that the importance of social capital lies in the consolidation and strengthening of the democratic system.This implies that impersonal trust and a culture of civic engagement are not resources that societies must wait centuries to obtain, but perhaps can be strengthened through the development of strong democratic institutions.
