The Influence of Teaching Literature in Developing EFL Students' Reading Skills: A Case Study of Secondary Schools, Eastern Gezira Locality, Gezira State, Sudan (2017)

الملخص

The last few decades witnessed a great development in employing literature in English language teaching due to the great benefits of using the literary texts in EFL classrooms. The study aims at highlighting the importance of reading as a basic productive skill to learn many languages, and reinforcing students' ability of reading skills, and increasing student's awareness so as to make more practice in reading different types of literary texts, determining whether the government and teachers have a role in promoting and motivating learners reading culture in Sudan or not. The study adopted the descriptive analytical method to reach the finally results, the researcher uses the questionnaire as a mean for collecting and gathering the required data form male and female in both government and private schools, the sample were thirty three (33) in EFL teachers, the collected date were analyzed by using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program. The researcher find out that reading skills is an important language skills to produce correct use of language, but it needs extensive training to be mastered specially in Sudanese secondary schools ,beside that reading skills must be introduced in new frame such as the literary texts and authentic material, English language teaches do not use authentic adds to developing English language. The researcher recommended EFL teachers in Sudanese secondary schools to exploit literary texts in reinforcing reading skills to reach better results and ask them-self why? what? and how? use a literary texts in classrooms to get a better benefit for that, so as to make students fully comprehend about what they read to promote and motive them self, and use a modern method and tools for teaching English language as to audio visual adds, and let the learners central approach to be more active in learning process, moreover the government as provider of educational in Sudan must design syllabus a cording to the students' needs inside or outside classroom reading.
