Purpose:Comparing the efficacy of perforated punctal plugs and 3-snip punctoplasty procedure in the treatment of epiphora caused by acquired punctal stenosis.Methods:Comparative Interventional Prospective Randomized Study.Eighteen stenosed punctae of ten patients wereincluded in the study. Mean age was 52.9 years (30 –67 years). Stenosed punctae were distributed randomly in 2 groups.Group A (perforated punctal plugs group) included 11 stenosed punctae, and Group B (3-snip puctoplasty) included 7 stenosed punctae.Stenosis was pure in 12 stenosed punctae, and was associated with eyelid laxity in 6 stenosed punctae (was treated by lateral tarsal strip).Results:There was no statistically significant difference insuccess rate between two groups when comparingfluorescein disappearing test (FDT) and tear meniscus(P > 0.25).But, there was statistically significant difference in success rate between two groups when comparing the degree of epiphora(P < 0.05).The success rate was higher in Group A (90.9% after one day,and 81.8% after one week, one month and 3 months)than in Group B (57.1%after one day, and 71.4% after one week, one month and 3 months).Conclusion:There is no difference between perforated punctal plugs and 3-snip punctoplastyprocedure when comparing fluorescein disappearing test (FDT) and tear meniscus, but perforated punctal plugs is more effective than 3-snip punctoplasyt procedure in decreasing the degree of epiphora cause by acquired puncatl stenosis.
