AbstractCultivating critical reading skills in learners has become very crucial for success inhigher education. Despite this, the majority of students at university level prioritize thedecoding of written symbols over the active analysis of the implied meaning. Readingwithout being critical has turned EFL learners into passive receivers of knowledge.Therefore, this study was conducted to explore the critical readers' kit by determiningwhat implements a critical reader should possess to achieve fulfillment. It alsoinvestigates the necessary reading strategies students can develop, and the teacher’s rolein developing students’ critical reading abilities during reading sessions. To answer theresearch questions, a case study was undertaken at Mohamed Boudiaf University ofM'sila, adopting students' questionnaire and EFL teachers' questionnaire as a datacollection instruments. The finding showed that both EFL learners and their teachershave not yet discovered the critical reader's toolkit since they are not virtually familiarwith the necessary implements and strategies that need to be adopted in order totransform passive readers into active critical readers. However, fostering critical readersis not an easy task as there are some potential obstacles and challenges that a readermight encounter. Consequently, some recommendations were presented to enable EFLlearners to overcome these obstacles, and to direct teachers' focus toward theenhancement of critical thinking skills and critical reading strategies. Thus, this will notonly prepare EFL learners to be better critical readers at universities ,but we also hopewe could produce successful individuals who could survive in the real world
