- These research works presented in this report deal with the design, simulation and characterization of amodal converter based on tapered air-silica microstructured cane. The structure diameter is gradually reduced along the propagation axisto formtwo tapers and the waist. The proposed technique is based on modal multiplexing MDM to increase the capacity of the optical communication systems. Its objective is to selectively excite modes by coupling between two different parallel fibers inserted in the microstructured cane. A profound study is carried out to characterize the coupling phenomenon in the different parts of the component. We have proposed two methods to satisfy the phase matching conditions between the selected modes by manipulating the internal geometry of the cane. We developed an algorithm to compensate the waist length when an additional coupling takes placein the tapers. We have minimized the intermodal coupling at the output of the component by adjusting the geometric parameters of the cane. Finally, we succeed to validate the excitation of the fundamental and the higher order modes of a multimode fiber at the output of an asymmetric directional coupler with the desired power splitting ratio.
