الملخص
A field experiment was conducted at the Demonstration Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Shambat, during the period extending from November 2005 through June 2006 to evaluate the effects of VAM inoculum and triple super phosphate fertilizer on growth and productivity of three onion cultivars. Three onion cultivars, Texas Early Grano, Saggai Improved and Kamleen (local cultivars) were used. The treatments included: inoculation by mycorrhizae fungi only, mycorrhizae inoculation with 50Kg/ha triple super phosphate, 50Kg/ha triple super phosphate only and control. A split-plot design was used with three replicates. Data collection for vegetative growth has been done at intervals of 6, 8, 12 and 16 weeks, after transplanting for Kamleen and Saggai Improved cultivars, and three times for Texas Early Grano cultivar at intervals of 6, 8 and 12 weeks. The parameters used included the number of leaves, plant height, fresh and dry weight of plant , root length, fresh and dry weight of root, bulb diameter, neck diameter, percentage of mycorrhizal colonization, total bulb yield, number of graded bulbs, total soluble solids, percentage of bulb dry matter, and phosphorus content in leaves and bulbs. Results showed that application of mycorrhizae inoculum with phosphorus gave a significant increase in the number of leaves after 8 and 12 weeks from transplanting. Control plots gave the highest number of leaves after 16 weeks from transplanting .There was no significant difference among cultivars in number of leaves. Texas Early Grano resulted in a significant increase in fresh weight of plants after 12 weeks, while there were no significant differences among treatments. There were significant differences in root length, fresh and dry weight of root between local cultivars and Texas Early Grano after 12 weeks from transplanting. There were no significant differences among treatments. There were significant interactions among onion cultivars and treatments in bulb diameter and bulb index after 8 weeks from transplanting. Saggai Improved gave the largest bulb diameter when phosphorus was added. Texas Early Grano gave the highest bulb index when mycorrhiza was added. There were significant increases between the local cultivars in neck diameter after 8 weeks. Texas Early Grano gave a significant increase in the bulb index after 6 and 12 weeks from transplanting. There were no significant differences among treatments. Application of mycorrhizae without phosphorus significantly increased the percentage of mycorrhizal colonization. No significant differences among the cultivars in response to mycorrhizal colonization. Results also showed that there were significant differences in total bulb yield among cultivars. Texas Early Grano cultivar gave the highest yield of 17.9 ton/ha while Kamleen and Saggai Improved cultivars gave 12.3 and 11.1 ton/ha respectively. There were significant differences among treatments. The control plot gave the highest total yield (16.3ton/ha). Texas Early Grano cultivar gave the highest number of large bulbs while Saggai Improved gave the highest number of medium bulbs. There were no significant differences for small and very small bulb numbers among cultivars. No significant differences among treatments were observed. There were significant differences among cultivars in total soluble solids, percentage of bulb dry matter content and phosphorus content in leaves and bulbs. Kamleen cultivar had the highest total soluble solids while Saggai Improved gave the highest percentage of bulb dry matter content. Texas Early Grano cultivar had the highest phosphorus content. There were no significant differences among treatments. The results also showed that there were no significant differences in plant length, dry weight and bulb diameter among cultivars and treatments.
