This thesis aims to study the Jordanian American relationship during thedecade of the 1990s and to evaluate the significance and impact of thisrelation on the political and economic stability and security of theJordanian political system. It also investigates American influence on theeconomic development of Jordan.The study utilizes the historical methodology and the analytical approachto reach its conclusions.The thesis is composed of nine chapters and the conclusions.The study concludes that the second Gulf War (1990-1991) has caused awide rift in the American Jordanian relations as a result of the clash in thepolicies of both nations on how to deal with the crises. On the one hand,Jordan called for an „Arab Solution‟ to the crises and for resolving theconflict peacefully. On the other hand, the United States saw that theconflict cannot be resolved except through military intervention. This madethe United States classify Jordan as siding with Iraq. Eventually the UnitedStates and its allies resolved the conflict by war. Consequently Jordan wasexposed to political and economic pressures resulting in the deterioration ofeconomic conditions in Jordan. In addition, the idea of Jordan as asubstitute state for Palestine was revived to undermine the stability of theJordanian political system.However, in the aftermath of the Madrid Peace Conference held in late1991, the Jordanian American relations began to improve and to take shapein the form of real partnership.In 1999, HM King Hussein died and his son Prince Abdullah wasproclaimed king to Jordan. The transition was peaceful and the youngmonarch worked hard on nurturing the Jordanian relationship with theUnited States.The researcher recommends that Jordan continues to nurture its goodrelations with the United States as a strategic policy to protect its security and stability in the region, in addition to its need for economicdevelopment.
