الملخص

The Helium-Neon laser is the most widely used laser among all types of lasers. This is due to the low costs of both of its preparation and usages as well as to its high accuracy of measurements compared to other lasers. The Helium –Neon laser considered as the best and standard choice for the demonstration of laser physics. Its capability of emitting a fraction of mille watt to tens of mille watts of visible red light at wave length of 632.8 nanometer is one of its distinguishable properties .The objective of this study is to use the Helium-Neon laser to detect the existence or non-existence of fine invisible cracks on the surface of solid bodies and, also, to measure their sizes (widths) in the case of their existence. The study has been made of both of the techniques of the diffraction of the laser light and that of the surface plasma resonance –spectrum so as to achieve this objective .the two mentioned techniques are used to detect and measure the width of one (same) Diffraction grating of a known width of fissures 1.67 micrometer ,supplied by its manufacturer . The diffraction technique experiment has been repeated three time using three different distances between the Diffraction grating and the laser light receiving screen. In the case of the surface plasma resonance –spectrum (technique) experiment the laser light is made to fall by an angle of45º on the (same above) Diffraction grating .the light emerging from the Diffraction grating is received by a spectrometer connected to computer which can point out the wavelength at which resonance takes place 664nm. After wards, by using the mathematical equations, the width of the fissures was determined. The diffraction technique experiment gave the result 1.47micrometer for the width of the Diffraction grating fissures and the other techniques gave the result 1.44 micrometer. These found the two results are very near to the actual fissures width of 1.67micrometer. From this study it can be concluded that the Helium –Neon laser techniques can be used to detect the existence of fine cracks that may exist on the surface of solid surface and can be used to measure their sizes .it is to be observed that these Helium–Neon techniques are free of biological health –hazard caused by radiation. This study recommends using both of the two Helium-Neon laser techniques, mention here, to see whether the accuracy of the measurements of width made by these techniques will change or will not change by changing the value of the width.
