Investigating Achievement of Millennium Development Goal Two on Universal Primary Education in Sudan: Using Data from the Ministry of Education Gezira State Sudan (1983-2011)

الملخص

This study aimed to examine the direction of assimilation and growth in the enrollment of males and females in primary education by gender with reference to Gezira state during the period (1983-2011). The analysis is based on annual time-series data, where the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method is used to estimate the trends and compound growth rates of males and females enrollment in primary education. The result indicates that no significant gender gap is observed in the enrolment in primary education during the period (1983-2011). While positive growth of females’ enrollment into primary education is observed. Despite these trends in primary education, it is observed that during the period (1983-2011) the growth of females’ enrollment into primary education has far exceeded that of males’ enrollment. These results indicate that the expansion in the primary education during the past decade has been largely in favor of females. These trends may have direct and indirect positive impacts on a wide spectrum of developmental dimensions, as related to women’s participation in the labor market, women’s empowerment, childbearing and child nutrition, child mortality, and overall economic progress. . The study recommends that Promoting access by child to education involves the cooperation of all stakeholders – parents, guardians, community leaders, government, Non-Governmental Organizations, researchers, etc. All those concerned should form a partnership to formulate vial able and innovative strategies to create an environment favorable to child’s education and eliminating gender disparities access to primary education and equality.
