الملخص

Although treatment with dental implantation has proved to be predictableand highly successful over long periods of time, there remain a number ofsituations where this modality of treatment becomes complex or fails andrequires the carrying out of certain corrective procedures. Many criteria for success have been suggested, however, one of thewidely accepted was defined by Albrektsson et al (1), which includes thefollowing:• an individual, unattached implant is immobile when tested clinically;• absence of peri-implant radiolucency;• vertical bone loss should be less than 0.2 mm annually after the first year;• absence of persistent and/or irreversible signs and symptoms such as pain, infections, neuropathies, para-esthesia, or violation of the mandibular canal;• as a minimum criterion for success and in the context of the above, thereshould be success rate of 85%, at the end of a five year observation periodand 80% at the end of a ten-year period.Whereas early failures of dental implant will present as pain, infection orloss of sensation, late failures will present as peri-implant radiolucency orcontinuous resorption of the bone around the installed fixture (2). Resorptiontakes place rapidly during the first year and then at a slower rate. If thiscontinues it may demoralize the support of the implant and result in its failureand loss. Peri-implant tissue health is mandatory for the success of the dentalimplant. Plaque accumulations are considered the most important single factorin the initiation of gingivitis around natural teeth and dental implants. If leftuntreated, the condition might result in the resorption of the underlying bone, aIXcondition that is termed periodontitis around natural teeth and peri-implantitisaround dental implants. These facts and others indicate that reasonable periodontal health isimportant prior to the placement of implants. In addition to that the health ofperi-implant tissues is important for the success of implant therapy and itsprognosis. However, few studies were carried out to study the health of periimplanttissues compared to periodontal health around natural teeth in humans. On the other hand very few studies where conducted to examine the health ofperi-implant tissues in relation to the timing of the implant therapy.
