الملخص

The study deals with the use of Information Technology in universitylibraries and early efforts of automation at the global, regional, and local levels. Italso discusses the factors that led to the introduction and applications ofautomation and the use of computers in university libraries.The University of Khartoum Library provided the case study for theevaluation of the use of (IT).The study traces the origins and early development ofthe Library and deals with its administrative framework, sections and branchlibraries. The history of automation at the library is analyzed on the basis of datacollected from the annual reports of the Library Committee and questionnairesfilled in by heads of sections of the Main Library, branch librarian and users.The present administrative structure of the library is discussed in the lightof recent developments in digital technology. the present efforts aiming at theimprovement of Khartoum university information network are discussed with aview to its future expansion in to an infrastructure for information technology inthe University.On the basis of the results obtained the study makes the followingrecommendations:The high sophisticated tools of information technology are needed toprovide better, quicker and comprehensive services for staff, researchers,graduates, and post graduate students and decision makers in the university.It is essential to provide advanced training for library staff and user throughintensive training programs, courses and workshops.It is also recommended that a thorough re-organization of the library staff beundertaken and new sections and parts be created in order to keep up with constanttechnological advances.The study, moreover, recommends establishing a digitization unit to dealwith university library publications and to build up a data base for the main andbranch libraries, one of the functions of such unit is the creation of an internalnetwork to connect the various libraries with the university information network
