Art is generally the historical register of nations’ past and present because it has accompanied man throughout his life. As art has evolved with the evolution of its means, today the image is one of the most widely circulated expressive means in the visual arts. This has led critics, aestheticians, and researchers in all artistic and cultural fields to increase interest in visual image to understand its content and analyze the different connotations it contains. The contemporary art doctrine known as “postmodernism”, which influenced the art arena, especially after the two world wars of the last century, is perhaps the most important art doctrine that has adopted this new art medium or material; the visual image. It used it in its expressive language and artistic practices and even made it one of the most important critical means of criticizing today’s consumerist societies. In this context, our research study entitled "visual art criticism in the field of image, pop art as a model " contributes to highlighting the criticism trend of pop art artists by analyzing some of their works that they directed to address issues at the heart of consumer popular culture based on the visual image. This study draws its relevance, first, by demonstrating the importance of the critical practice of the artist along with the visual or artistic practice and, secondly, by demonstrating the role of the influence of new materials, and above all the visual image, not only in the expression and production of works of art but also in recognizing the culture of consumer societies and the behaviors of their members; third, to enrich the Arab library in the field of artistic research and cultural studies. To achieve the research objective of the study, we have relied on the analytical descriptive approach. The main findings of this study include: -The essence of pop art artists’ artistic practice is linked first and foremost to the critical process by which the critic tries to describe, analyze, and interpret the artistic product, which on the one hand includes many intellectual dimensions associated with the artist’s historical background, and, on the other hand, includes the incubating cultural environment, whether in the process of criticizing or perfectly highlighting it. -The image and its content marked an important shift in artistic criticism. The image was transformed into a critical means of the conditions that American consumer society had known in the last century.
