الملخص

This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of wood species, treatment of wood and cement/wood ratio on the compatibility of wood with cement by conducting factorial experiment using a completely randomized design. The species examined were Acacia nilotica, Balanites aegyptiaca, Calotropis procera, Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Eucalyptus microtheca using various cement/wood ratios. The treatments were cold water extraction, addition of calcium chloride and control (untreated wood). Planer shavings, cement and water were mixed; mortar cubes were prepared and tested for compressive strength in a universal testing machine after immersing in water for 28 days and their density were determined on oven-dry weight and green volume bases. Each of the three main effects (species, treatment and cement/wood ratio) had significantly influenced the compressive strength, however, none of these factors was acting independently.Differences among species were significant at all combinations of treatments and cement/wood ratios. The performance of the species varied with treatments; however, E. camaldulensis was always ranking high regardless of the treatments. A. nilotica (the most inhibitory species when untreated) was among the best performing species when treated with calcium chloride.Significant improvements in cement-setting were achieved by the removal of water-soluble extractives and sugars from wood. Such improvement, however, did not take place in E. microtheca. The addition of calcium chloride significantly enhanced compatibility in cement wood-water mixtures. The compressive strength decreased with decreasing cement/wood ratio; this effect was more pronounced at lower ratios. The ratio at which the mixtures started to gain appreciable strength varied among species and treatments. Strong, significant correlation was found between the compressive strength and the density of the mixture. The density was significantly influenced by the species and the ratios.
