Asterolinon (L.) Duby.

The genera of Primulaceae (Anagallis L., Androsace L., Asterolinon Hoffmanns & Link., Dionysia Fenzl, Lysimachia L., Primula L.) and Samolus L. from Samolaceae in Iraq have been systematically studied. This study involved comparative gross and micromorphological analyses based on information obtained from field specimens directly or from herbarium specimens, as well as anatomical, palynological, chemical, molecular, ecological, and geographical distribution studies. Numerical taxonomy was also applied to all species. The morphological study included variation in root features, stems, leaves, flowering and fruiting parts of the species. The most important characters for each species in different genera for family identification were determined. Sketches, tables, and photographs were prepared. All characteristics were used for different species, and it was found that vegetation and some reproductive characters contributed most to the separation of convergent species. Anatomical characters of leaf epidermises, calyx, bracts, stems, petiole, and peduncles were studied, in addition to cross-sections of the stem, leaf blade, petiole, and peduncles. Leaf venation and indumentum were also studied, and their taxonomic importance was assessed. The study also found that pollen grains have taxonomical importance for distinguishing genera, with three types of apertures observed: colporate, colpate, and colpoid. The number of germination pores, such as polyporate, distinguished Dionysia Fenzl from other genera, which had tri- to tetraporate pollen. Flavonoid and alkaloid compounds were studied for some species from different genera using the TLC technique. It was found that these species are rich in flavonoid and phenolic compounds, whereas alkaloids were scarce. Total protein was also detected in these species. Molecular systematic studies based on Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) for amplifying Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) regions using P2/ITS-5 or ITS-3/ITS-4 primers, and Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphisms (RFLPs) using the restriction enzyme MspI, showed that molecular data have taxonomical value for understanding phylogeny and the convergence and divergence relationships between species. The present research also dealt with ecological and geographical distribution of species and genera of Primulaceae in Iraq. Results revealed that species are distributed in the north, north-east, and west of Iraq. Anagallis arvensis L. is the most prevalent species, tolerant to different environmental conditions, while Primula L. species are less widespread and limited to one district. The districts Rawanduz (MRO) and Sulaymaniyah (MSU) ranked first in species distribution with 75%, while the southern desert (DSD) and Basra (LBA) ranked last with 16.7%. Maps illustrating the geographical distribution of all species were prepared. The species were numerically analyzed based on the number of selected characteristics from various studies to obtain similarity and difference ranges between species. A dendrogram was drawn for this purpose. As a result of these observations, this study determined that the number of species and genera of Primulaceae in Iraq includes six genera and eleven taxa (including species, subspecies, and varieties). Samolus L. was transferred from Primulaceae to Samolaceae. In addition, the species Lysimachia linum-stellatum L. was transferred to the genus Asterolinon (L.) Duby. Finally, all taxa were treated taxonomically, and a key was prepared for all studied taxa.
