الملخص

The weaning food stage is one of the most important stages in the lives of children with diet changes from full reliance on mother's milk. This stage gradually introduce them to meals feeding after the sixth month and reduce breastfeeding which is to be stopped at two years of age. This study aim to evaluate the health status of weaning children. A questionnaire was made to deal with family economic, demographic and health status. Another questionnaire was also developed addressing the child nutrition and health status. The regions selected in Gezira State, Wad Medani city were Mayo 40 area and Atra village which is about 5 km North of Wad Medani, The parameters of weight, length, mid upper circumference (MUAC) and odema were taken for the studied 50 children. Statistical analysis for the questionnaire and measured parameter data was carried using SPSS. There is a close relationship between family income and the incidence of diseases (diarrhea): the higher the family income the less morbidity, and also reduced breastfeeding increased incidence of diarrhea. Higher age of weaning was found to improve child health status. The recorded weaning ages at Mayo 40 were not more than 20 months while at Atra village up to the 23 months were recorded. It is recommended to ask mothers to continue breastfeeding up to two years of age, taking into account the introduction of advised complementary foods gradual
