Syntactic Analysis of Transitive Verb Particle Construction with Reference to Information Structure Theory

الملخص

This research investigates the phenomenon of verb particle constructions, and their influence by Information Structure theory.The verb particle construction in English is defined as those ‎verb preposition and verb adverbial combination which pattern ‎syntactically as a unit. ‎ In general,the verb particle construction can appear as transitive, ‎intransitive, or more complex variants.‎The research focuses on transitive verb particle constructions ‎in English. Perhaps the most striking property of transitive (VP’s) in ‎English is their appearance in two alternating orders as continuous order and discontinuous order.The term Information Structure (IS) refers to the division or ‎organization ‎of the clause/utterance and its elements according to the ‎discourse ‎situation. IS has two pillars; ‎the speaker’s assumptions about the hearer’s state of knowledge‎ and the organization of the clause/utterance‎.In the current study, the main emphasis is placed on the alternation between ‎the continuous order and the discontinuous order. The study ‎shows that the alternation between the two orders is not free.‎ The choice of the word order of VPC is highly influenced by the IS of the context. The purpose of the study is to discuss the influence of Information ‎‎Structure theory in verb ‎particle construction.‎‎ The research contributes to existing knowledge of the verb particle construction used by speakers of English language worldwide. Given the significant differences between the continuous order and discontinuos order ‎, this work helps to increase understanding of Information Structure Theory and of what discourse situation influences in the word order.
