Detection of Brucella Antibodies In Cattle of Al-Renk Area, Upper Nile State

الملخص

A serological study of bovine brucellosis was carried out todetermine the magnitude of spread ofthe disease in cattle at Al-Renkarea, Upper Nile State, Southern Sudan. Rose Bengal test (RBT),serum agglutination test (SAT) and milk ring test (MRT) were usedfor detection of Brucellaantibodies in serum and milk samples.A total of 100 serum samples were collected and tested, 68 werefemale and 32 were male samples. The samples were collected fromfour sites in the town: the slaughterhouse (20, 15 males and 5females), the middle of the town (20, 10 males and 10 females), thenorthern part (10, 7 males and 3 females), and the southern part of thetown (50, all females).Screening of the test samples by RBT revealed 28 (28%)positive cases and by SAT revealed 25 (25%). Positive reactors werefrom both sexes and nearly similar number was detected by the twotests. When the results of the two tests were compared with eachother, RBT agreed with SAT in 84% of positive samples, while SATagreed with RBT in only 75%. In total, 32 (32%) animals werepositive by both RBT and SAT.The total milk samples collected were 100; 26 of them werecollected from individual cows from those which were also sampledfor serum and 74 were bulk tank milksamples from two of the localmarkets. Only 15 (15%) of them were positive by MRT, nine of themwere from individual cows and six from market samples with adetection rate of 36.4% and 8.1%, respectively.When results of serum and milksamples of the 26 cows werecompared, similar number (9 cows) was positive by both RBT andixMRT, but with 77.9% agreement with each other. While, only sixsamples were positive by SAT, which were also positive by the othertwo tests.The finding of this study indicated that the rise in antibody titerrate of cattle with brucellosis atAl-Renk area and possibly in thewhole Upper Nile State is high. Also, it showed that RBT isapparently more sensitive than SAT and similar in sensitivity to MRT
