- The objective of this thesis is to study the influence on water vapor injection on an internal combustion engine operation. We used the SOLIDWORKS software to study the flow of the mixture (water vapor and hydrocarbon) in an exchanger before injection it into the combustion chamber. Then, we used the CHEMKIN software to simulate combustion as a function of the mass fractions ofthe intake gas mixture. An experimental part was then made, by putting in place an experimental loop for the study of a modified engine. This study made it possible to measure the performance of the engine such as torque and power. The numerical and experimental results obtained show that the injection of steam alters the operation of an internal combustion engine, both in terms of engine performance and in terms of pollutant emissions. Indeed, the production of carbon monoxide CO and carbon dioxide CO2are also affected by the injection of water vapor. For an injection of 20% H2O, CO and CO2 emission reductions can reach 60% and 18%, respectively. Moreover, the addition of steam resulted in a decrease in the cylinder temperature. This decrease must be coupled with a reduction in the cylinder pressure which may otherwise explain the reduction in engine performance. To overcomethis problem, we studied the combined influence of steam injection with the following parameters: compression ratio (CR: Compression Ratio); The Intake Pressure (IP) and the Intake Temperature (IT). An increase in CR increases cylinder pressure and therefore increases engine performance. As a result, by increasing the CR, we can obtained the same performance of an enginerunning without steam injection (0% H2O and CR = 9.5) and other works with 10% H2O (10% H2O and CR = 13), while gaining 10% of the fuel consumption and 44.36% and 8.62% reduction of CO and CO2 emissions, respectively. Also, increasing the intake pressure increases the cylinder temperature and pressure, consequently the engine performance. Indeed, the same performances can be obtained for the two following conditions (IP = 1.065 atm with 20% H2O) at (IP = 0.9 atm with 0% H2O) while gaining 20% of the fuel consumption and 67.8% and 18.05% reduction of CO and CO2 emissions, respectively. Another solution of performance reduction due to the steam injection is the reduction of the intake temperature. Indeed, the same performances of an engine operating without steam injection (0% H2O and IT = 530K) and other with 10% H2O (10% H2O and IT = 500K) we can obtained, while gaining 10% of the fuel consumption and 44.36% and 7.85% reduction of CO and CO2 emissions, respectively.
