inrecent years the use of wireless local area networks is increasing rapidly, and have become a necessity for the work of many companies and institutions, especially after the orientation of these networks to support real-time applications, like (Viber, Skype), and the users of these networks hope sufficient quality of service QoS for the operation of these applications in a level close to the level at which they are familiar in wired networks, But the medium access control protocol approved in the basic standard for wireless local area networks IEEE 802. 11 is unable to insure the quality of service requirements for real-time applications, cause it treats all applications in the same way regardless of their requirements, and puts them all in one queue awaiting transmission according to rule "First Input First Output" FIFO. Standard updates like IEEE 802. 11e and recently the amendments (IEEE 802. 11aa, IEEE 802. 11ae) was adopted to support the quality of service QoS. We will examine the improvements achieved to support the quality of service for real-time applications compared with the basic standard, and we'll compare the medium access control protocols MAC adopted in standard 802. 11e with his counterpart in the basic standard in supporting voice over Internet protocol VOIP applications. The simulation is carried using the OPNET simulator in different network environments and by using different application loads, the results show the importance of using the standard IEEE 802. 11e networks devoted to serve variety of applications operate at the same time, while in the networks devoted to a specific type of applications, the use of the basic standard provides better performance, also the results showed the limitation of 802. 11e for achieving the required quality of service in some cases. We proposed an idea about flexible mechanism to assess the importance of applications and to give them importance vector, in order to help us give different vectors for the same application and this mechanism allows least important applications to access the medium faster in the absence of application packages with high importance as well as it solves the problem of virtual collision within stations supporting quality of service.
